They renovated, scrubbed, sandblasted, scraped and scoured, but for some inexplicable reason the stain remained. It was unescapable, a bright, in-your-face reminder of what had happened on that floor. People walking by avoided looking at it, no one wanted to lease space in the building anymore, and you would even go our of your way to drive around the block rather than pass under it. It persisted, sublimating itself into the collective subconscious of the city, insinuating itself into the fabric of this urban reality.
